Production Status Updates #4 & MPC Images
about 1 year ago – Fri, Apr 28, 2023 at 02:21:55 AM

Hello, everyone! 👋

It's Lucya with Bad Comet here, back with another update! Twice in 1 month but we have some news to share:)

1.  Mass-production Timeline Update

This just in! Our manufacturers have let us know that Assembly should be concluded by May 9th!  🥳

This means production itself should be fully completed by the 9th of May! Once Assembly is finished, the products will be packaged into their corresponding pallets to set sail to each destination. We're already in talks with our fulfillment company to start ocean freight as soon as production is complete. It looks like we're on track to complete our ocean freight booking to each of the continents by mid-May or so, so once we have clearance we'll be sure to be back with an update!

The team is overjoyed with the progress, and excited that the long production phase is nearing its end and we're steps closer to fulfillment😁.

2. Photos of the Mass-production Copy (MPC)

This may be what a lot of you were waiting for! The Mass-production copy arrived safely and I've got to say, it looks quite amazing. Our prototype copies always look amazing as well but to have a final copy in hand really does feel different😊. I would like to add that it is quite a bit of content to get through so, grab a cup of your favorite drink and let's get ready to scroll!

Let's start with the main game box:)

Not pictured but I'd like to remind everyone that the side art for both the outer and inner box sides are beautiful as well:) Options upon options for those of our Backers who love to display their collection!

The Base Rulebook feels nice and sturdy👍.

3. National Pet Day Event Results

Now that we're done reviewing our MPC, if you remember, last update we had a quick event in honor of National Pet Day:) We want to thank everyone who participated in the event. It was amazing to read about all your wonderful stories and see all the adorable pictures of your loved ones as well! I hope we can hold more events like this in the future😉. I hope everyone enjoyed reading all the wonderful stories as well. With that said, without further ado, I'd like to present our 3 winners!

We'd like to congratulate Kristopher Wagner, Benwoo, and Ian Wilz for the win!

We are in talks with the winners and in the process of creating the characters so stay tuned!

🥳🥳🥳

Well now that was a scroll full of material wouldn't you say? 😅

Let's end today's update with a fun fact about our Macaw!

Did you know that the Macaw's facial feather patterns are all unique to the individual Macaw?!  Some scientists attribute the uniqueness to being a kind of fingerprint for the birds.

That's all for today:) Until next time!

Production Status Updates #3
about 1 year ago – Tue, Apr 11, 2023 at 01:40:37 AM

Hello, everyone!

Bad Comet's Lucya here🐇 April has arrived and we’re due for another update on Life of the Amazonia! This might be a quicker one than most;).

 1. Address Lock Reminder 🔒

As we mentioned in our last update, April 14th is the day when your address on Backerkit will be locked. After the 14th you won’t be able to update your address directly on Backerkit so please take this time to double-check your address and update anything accordingly. Just as a refresher, here are the steps to modify your address on Backerkit.

  • Locate the survey email Backerkit sent out to complete your surveys and follow the link to your personal survey.
  • There should be an “Edit Your Address” box at the upper right-hand corner of the screen, click that button and it should take you to a new page.
  • On this new page, you should be able to see the address you’ve inputted into the Backerkit system. If you would like to edit your address click the “Edit Shipping Info” button under your current shipping info, edit your address, and confirm.

As always, if you are having any issues please contact us. Also, if you end up needing to change your address after the 14th, don’t worry, just send us a quick message through Kickstarter and we’ll see if we can help you out!

 2. Updates on Mass Production Copies

We’ve received confirmation from the manufacturers that all components should have finished production by the 17th of April, which is just about a week away! We expect to receive our MPC(Mass Production Copy) late April. Once we confirm that everything looks great they’ll be on their way to the assembly line to be packaged. This process will take about another 10 days to complete so we’re slowly but surely heading to the finish line!

Once we receive our MPC we’ll be sure to share with everyone some images of the copy. Therefore, expect another update in late April! 😃

 3. Tell Us About your Pet & Win a Caricature

Did you know that today is National Pet Day? Though it may be a national day in the US, why not take this day to appreciate our lovely companions😊?

In light of this wonderful day, our team has a surprise. We’ll be choosing 3 winners for a chance to have their lovely pet(s) characterized by our amazing artist Sophia. We'll leave you some examples of our team member's very own furry 4-legged friends! 🐶🐱

For those of you who would like to enjoy Sophia's process, here's a quick video from our social media postings!

Don't forget to leave your comments/photos and make sure you spend today with lots of love!

We'll end today with a fun fact about our Iguana! Do any of our Backers have Iguanas? If so, tell us about them in the comments below🦎!

Iguana

An interesting feature of green iguanas is their third eye. This is an extra eye on top of their head and it can help iguanas detect the movement of a predator sneaking up on them from above! This handy feature allows the iguana to escape.

That's all for today! We'll be back with photos of our Mass Production Copies real soon!

Best,

Lucya🍊

Production Status Updates#2
about 1 year ago – Mon, Mar 13, 2023 at 02:51:01 AM

Hi everyone! Hani here😊.

How has everyone been? The weather here in Seoul last Saturday clearly showed that spring was finally here as it rose to 23°C(73.4°F)! The funny thing is though, 2 days later we’re at -2°C(28.4°F) so I came to work in a puffer jacket, hoping the warmth of spring greets us again soon🥺.

Currently, Life of the Amazonia is well underway and is progressing along all the mass-production steps! Today, I’ve collected all the production process details thus far to share them with you through today’s update.

1. Estimated Production & Delivery 🚚

If we don’t encounter any major issues during the production process, mass-production is expected to conclude mid-May. When exactly the Backers will receive the game is subject to logistical circumstances, but as of right now, we estimate that shipments could commence throughout the continents by August 2023. A more specific estimated time of arrival for each country should be ready to share towards the end of May when Ocean Freight bookings have been confirmed so hang tight😉.  One thing for certain is that the logistics disruptions that were caused by COVID have eased a lot, so we anticipate that you’ll be able to receive your copies sooner than the expected December 2023 deadline we set out during our Kickstarter campaign!

2. Address Lock on April 14th 🔒

The addresses on Backerkit will be locked on the 14th of April. After this date Backers will be unable to change their addresses directly on Backerkit. So please take this time to double-check if you’ve inputted the correct address in Backerkit. If you’re unsure of how to check if you’ve inputted the correct address, follow the steps outlined below.

If you are having trouble don’t hesitate to contact us! We’re here to help. And do not worry, if you end up needing to change your address after the 14th, just send us a quick message through Kickstarter and we’ll help you out!

3. Updated Boat Shape 🚤

In the process of continuing to improve the design of the components with the manufacturers to ensure the boat’s sturdiness, we agreed that the nose of the boat was too sharp and the cutting lines meeting together at a single point reduced durability. Therefore, we’ve tweaked the front of the boat, the nose, to be a bit rounder in order to spread the pressure more evenly.

It’s a small change, but I think it definitely made for a more well-built design. With that, the long journey of our boat design has finally come to an end!

Final Expected Image

🦜🦜🦜

Below are details of the production process of our mass-production order we put in on February 8th. Take a look to see what we’ve been up to! Lots of images of our cute meeples will be attached but for those of you busy bees, it isn’t an essential read😊.

4. E-proof File Confirmation ✅

We confirmed all our e-proof files by mid-February. For those unfamiliar, e-proof files are files that converted the visual sources publishers sent into forms suitable for printing in a factory setting. When Bad Comet delivers the image source to the manufacturers, the manufacturers create an e-proof file of these files and send it back to us. When Bad Comet confirms the E-proof file, the actual production process begins. It’s critical that the files are carefully reviewed, as this will be the last chance to correct any issues before production begins. This process is quite a pain and very difficult, and to our team members who have looked through and reviewed the same files countless times, further errors are usually not easily visible.

Sample of the game card e-proof file

Here’s a little “hidden picture puzzle” that could show you a bit about the hardships of reviewing through e-proof files. The image below is from one of our Life of the Amazonia punchboards, the left being the front of the board and the right being the back. Once we confirmed all the e-proof files, the manufacturers contacted me, letting me know that there seems to be a problem with the punchboard pictured below. Can you tell what the issue was? Click here to see a larger image!

Did you find it? If you did, you win the gold medal for keen eyes for sure! The answer is….. the number 1 hidden among the tree images!

Let me tell you…. the goosebumps, the chills that went through my body when I confirmed the mistake. Thanks to the final thorough inspection of our manufacturers, we managed to get rid of the “1” on the tree that somehow decided to hide there. Though we checked and re-checked all the files multiple times, I’m always worried that, like the “1” hidden in the trees, we’ll have another one of these “Where’s Waldo/Wally” moments. However, since the Bad Comet team members and our partner manufacturers have scanned and reviewed these files countless times, I would like to ease my conscience and believe that there will be not a single issue with the final product🙂.  Long story short, through these different processes, all the e-proof files have been confirmed and completed, and we have finally begun producing!

5. Animal Meeple Production 🐤

One of the steps of our mass-production process we make sure to put the utmost care in is meeple production. Today, I wanted to go into a bit more detail on how these lovely animal meeples come to be after the orders are placed.

5-1. Wood Cutting

The wood is cut according to the shape design and dimensions that we sent over. Isn’t it satisfying to see these shapes so neatly cut out? So many cute little Woodpeckers!!!

5-2. Base Color Printing

Then the base color of the meeples is applied to the wooden pieces according to the agreed upon Pantone color. Because meeple prints do not automatically print the colors we set them to on the computer like digital prints, this step requires careful adjustments by the manufacturers and confirmation on our part to achieve the desired color.

The manufacturers take photos of the meeples being colored in real-time and share them with us, which then goes through the process of the art team deliberating and confirming the colors.

If we have ones that we feel do not match the Pantone color, such as the Black Jaguar pictured below, we request a reprint.

(Left) Black Jaguar 1st print. We requested a reprint because the coloring came out too light.

(Right) Black Jaguar 2nd print. Definitely darker than the 1st. Final confirmation to move forward with this color.

5-3. Pattern Printing

After all the base colors have been confirmed, the pattern is printed on top of the base color. After printing a small batch of maybe 1 to 2 of each type of meeple, the manufacturers send us photos for confirmation. When our confirmations have been completed, the full order of meeples is then processed to print.

Now, below is a photo the manufacturers sent over of our meeples for confirmation. If you look closely, you might be able to see that the print job of the animal meeples should be quite a bit clearer than our previous title, Wild: Serengeti’s animal meeples. This is all thanks to a brand-new printing machine! Shall we go on to check out these meeple samples together? Oh! Please do keep in mind that the meeples you see pictured and the meeples you’ll see in person may differ as photos take lots of factors into play. Also, please note that they’ve mentioned the weather was quite gloomy when these pictures were taken so the pictures have come out a bit dark overall.

Stretch goals!

Add-ons

Through these different processes, Bad Comet was able to finally confirm meeple prints on March 10th. Based on the confirmed content, tens of thousands are animal meeples are being produced at this very moment! Yay!

I know that today I went over the production process in quite a bit more detail than usual, how was it? We are always working hard in collaboration with our partner manufacturers to create better-quality games.

With that said, March’s update will conclude with a fun fact about our Anaconda!

Did you know that in terms of diameter and weight, the anaconda is the largest snake in the world?! The biggest recorded being 500 lbs (227 kg) and 27.7 ft (8.43 m) long! By the time Anacondas reach adulthood, they can manage to challenge a capybara, caiman, or even a jaguar!

That’s all for today! Until next time

Production Status Updates
over 1 year ago – Sun, Feb 12, 2023 at 08:16:56 PM

Hello, it’s Hani

How these months go by! It’s yet another new month and I’m here with our monthly update😊.

Let me share with you the current production status as of February 2023.

1. Reverting Boat Shape Design (from square back to triangular!)

In our last update, we mentioned that the design of the Discard Pile Boat was not stable, therefore, we were testing different designs to modify it from the pointed triangular tip to something more durable. After the last update, we received samples of the squared-out boats but they were not as sturdy as we expected them to be.

The thought we kept having was that if the pressure was directly transferred to the cut line every time the boat was handled, it would decrease durability as pressure would be applied to the cut line continuously. So once again, we needed to find an alternative, hopefully, a much superior design, and these are the results.

3D expected image

We’ve added a support to the front portion of the existing triangular boat shape. When held by hand, the pressure does not directly transfer to the cut line because the support divides the pressure. The boat is now much stronger and boasts better durability.

[History of the Discard Pile Boat]

Prototype 1 (folding line) → Prototype 2 (size increase for upgraded tokens)→ Prototype 3 (folding line to cut line refinement) → Prototype 4 (square front modification) → Final (triangular front modification with an added support)

I’m glad we were able to revert back to the triangular front that you, our Backers, seemed to favor more! In fact, even the boats traditionally ridden in the Amazon have pointed noses as well😃. If there’s a downside to this news, it’s that assembly is a bit more cumbersome as we’ve added a piece, but since the boats do not be disassembled once assembled, we didn’t think it was a critical downside to turn the idea down.

2. Mass-production

After the boat design modifications and making a new sample, we weren’t able to get our mass-production orders in at the end of January as I mentioned in our last update. We were, however, able to place a mass-production order on February 8th, 2023, and are currently awaiting e-proof.

We are still progressing on schedule and are 1 month ahead of the expected timeline. If there are no major issues, mass production should take about 3 months and should conclude in mid-May.

3. Final Rulebook

Below is the Final Rulebook edited with the feedback of our Backers incorporated. I wanted to take this time to thank all our Backers for the amazing feedback. Thanks to you, our Rulebook has gone through quite an upgrade.

Base Game Rulebook

Expansion Rulebook

4. Insect Cards

After our last update, we received quite a bit of feedback letting us know that the Critter Card wording was a bit disappointing. When you read Critter, it is inevitable to bring up small mammals like mice and rabbits, right? An alternative was to use “Arthropod Cards”, but even I, as someone who developed the game, was pretty sure I would never call the cards “Arthropod Cards” in-game. If you’re new to the game, I feel as though it would only be second nature to call these cards Insect Cards, right? What we wanted to show through these cards were insects, and I felt that nothing could express these cards as well as the title “Insect Cards”. Therefore, we gathered the team once more and went through a lengthy discussion, and finally confirmed the name of the cards to be Insect Cards!

However, as you know, the spiders that were included in the Insect Cards became problematic because these creatures were not technically “insects” but fell under the arthropod classification, therefore, we would like to ask for our Players understanding.

(Rulebook pg 12)

If you’ve read the Note portion above, you might have caught on to the fact that Centipedes, which so many of our Backers missed, were included in the Insect Cards! I think what persuaded me the most was comments along the lines of, “there was feedback that the centipede was quite an uncomfortable scene, but spiders and cicadas might be uncomfortable to some, so why can’t centipedes be included as well?” As always, our biggest gratitude to our Backers who are always willing to give us various feedback. Without further ado, say hello and welcome our newest friend the centipede! ;)

We can’t forget about a fun fact before we end today’s update. Today we’ll feature our Armadillo.

Did you know that Armadillos can hold their breath for up to 6 minutes? When they go to cross a body of water, they inflate their stomachs with air and float across, or sink down to the bottom and use their claws to walk across. Amazing right?!

That’s everything for today. We'll see you again next month!

Best,

Hani Chang🎈

Rulebook Feedback/Locking Orders/Prototype Pictures
over 1 year ago – Thu, Jan 12, 2023 at 01:58:54 AM

Hello, everyone! It’s Hani.

I hope everyone is having a happy new year! Our team has fully recovered their energy through the 10-day winter vacation. We started off 2023 overflowing with energy that we’ve finished up the Pre-production Stage of Life of the Amazonia. So today there’s a lot to go over. So everyone, hold on to your hats, keep your eyes wide open, and follow me!

1. Locking Orders on January 15th

Backerkit surveys will be locked on January 15th. After that, order quantities can not be changed. You'll be able to purchase extra copies after the 15th but when you go in to make an order you'll only see the Retail version available for purchase. The Retail Edition will not include Stretch Goals as they’ll need to be purchased separately and these copies will not contain the KS exclusives.

So mark your calendars! If you are a Backer who wishes to modify your order, make sure you complete it by January 15th. Change of Address on the other hand is possible after this date so don't worry 😊

We see about 100 Backers who have yet to participate in the survey, so don’t forget to complete your pledge before we lock orders. If surveys are completed after the 15th, please note that delivery could be delayed. If you have issues with your invitation or have not yet received one, please message us through Kickstarter. We’ll be sure to help you out.

2. We need your feedback

We are almost at the end of our rulebook journey. We’re almost there but there are still minor adjustments and tweaks we need to make to make it perfect. I’ll have the currently updated rulebook linked below so take a look and let us know what you think. Any constructive feedback or input will help us to make sure it can be the best it can be😊. If you see things that need improvement in terms of clarity or wording, images that are confusing, or anything you see that could enhance our rulebook, we would greatly appreciate it.

As you can imagine, everyone on the team has read and reread this rulebook countless times, and because the game’s mechanics have become second nature to us, sometimes it’s hard for us to tell if parts of the rulebook are too vague or not clear enough for first-time players. So if you have the time to take a quick look, we would love your feedback!

Base Game Rulebook

Expansion Rulebook

Click the Rulebook PDF link above and leave your comment directly on the PDF. If possible, we would appreciate all rulebook-related edits/feedback left on the PDF page to make sure we can refer to the exact part you are referring to, in order to make sure we can modify the portion accordingly.

We'll need enough time to reflect on the feedback before making our final revisions so we'll keep the PDF open until January 18th. Until then, if time allows, we'd appreciate your help! Thanks.

3. Current Status

1) Finalizing balance through playtests (Complete)

  • Through countless feedbacks and playtest, the delicate process of adjusting the numbers and balancing has been completed! Through this process, there were some ability changes and some minor tweaks that took place.
  • Variant Mode
✅Lightening Mode: Lightening Mode has been added for those who prefer a quicker game or for those who are not too familiar with board games. The Lightening Mode is a faster play with fewer meeples than the Base Game.
✅Solo Mode: A total of 9 scenarios have been included in the Solo Mode. Each scenario will have its own rules and restrictions.

2) Finalizing Art (Complete)

  • Unique Animal Cards: Let me reveal the images of the Unique Animal Cards we’ve unlocked together through our Stretch Goals. We’ve added a difficulty indicator to the bottom right of the cards.
  • Critter Cards : What used to be our Insects Cards have been renamed as Critter Cards, as suggested by our Backers. A number of insects that live in the Amazon Rainforest fascinated me, but among them, I planned out our Critter Cards by selecting representative and beautiful insects that also fit in with the card's abilities to some extent. Visually, I wanted to make sure to portray the various colors and vibrancy Amazonia had to offer.

One other thing I wanted to share was that quite a few Backers wanted to see the Giant Amazonian Centipede through the Critter Cards, however, in the end, the centipede did not make the cut. Centipedes are one of Amazon’s representative insects and are essential to the ecosystem, but unfortunately, some players judged that seeing these creatures on the cards made them feel uneasy. When we actually used the image during play, quite a few team members as well as playtesters had a hard time, so we decided we couldn’t include the requested centipede in our Critter Card lineup. I hope everyone understands.

  • Scenery Cards: Through our Scenery Cards, we tried to include various animals that were requested by our Backers but unfortunately did not make the cut to be included as Stretch Goals. If you look carefully at our Scenery Card art, you’ll find a Shark, the Jabiru, Blue Macaw, and the Puma!

3) Determining the Final Components Through Sample Work

Through several samples, we were able to decide on our final components. Shall we review the sample photos together?😁

NOTE: The meeples, cards, boards, and boxes pictured below are all samples that were printed with digital printing and processed without molds. Please note that there will be a difference between the samples shown here versus the actual mass-production quality.

Game Box

UV printing of the Life of the Amazonia logo.

Card Linen Finish

Punchboard Linen Finish

Punchboard Tree

Base Animal Meeples : There was some feedback that the Jaguar’s expression looked a bit sad, so we modified the design a bit. The color of the Otter that was decided by vote looks great now that I’ve seen it in person.

Base Game’s Unique Animals. The shape of the Amazon Dolphin’s back has been modified to reflect its actual physical appearance.

The Hoatzin’s color has been modified to a darker blue color instead of black. Overall, we have a variety of black-colored animals, so we wanted to give our Hoatzin a brighter feel.

We received feedback that the overall sizes of these meeples were a bit small so they’ve been increased.

Animal meeples added from Stretch Goals.

Kickstarter Exclusive Meeples.

Base Game Rulebook & the Mini-expansion Rulebook added through Stretch Goals.

※The Mini-expansion added through Stretch Goals will be packaged and included inside the Base Game Box.

Punchboard Waterfall of Life. After adjusting the design for a more parallel look, the assembly became much easier.

Among the Player Markers, the blue markers were quite a bit similar to the background color of the waterfall, making them a lot less visible, so we’ve modified the color to be quite a bit darker.

In order to make sure that the tokens could be stored with more stability, we’ve redesigned the middle partition to hold and secure the cover as well.

The images to follow will be of our add-ons!

Upgraded Resource Tokens stored in the Token Vault

The Seed Tokens are so cute.

Wooden Waterfall of Life

I wanted quickly go over the dramatic changes our Discard Boats have gone through before I show you the sample.

After seeing and testing out various samples, there were 2 issues with our existing design.

  1. If the fold lines for assembly were made with pressing-lines, once assembled, the boat would be a lot sturdier BUT the boat would have a high probability of tearing during the folding process. This is because the cardboard itself is quite thick and strong, so a good amount of force will be applied when folding.

In order to solve this issue, we would have to manufacture the boats with half-cutting lines rather than pressing-lines, to make sure that the issue of tearing during assembly could be prevented. However, when we sampled the ones with the half-cutting lines, the boat after assembly was too flexible, so when we went to pick them up, the front part of the boat would bend and overall felt very unstable when handling.

Therefore, by changing the shape of the existing boat, we were able to solve both issues of tearing during assembly and stability. We were able to increase stability by making the front of the boats square shape rather than triangular.

The shape of the boat in the video above is also not final, we are currently in the process of further developing this portion by consistently going over our options with our manufacturers. Once the shape of the boat has been decided and the final samples have been received, we’ll be sure to share them with you through our next update.

3D image of the projected modified boat.

4. What’s next?

  • Once we’ve gathered the feedback about our rulebook and have it updated accordingly, I’d say Life of the Amazonia will pretty much be ready for mass production.
  • We prepare to put in our mass production orders in late January, after the Chinese New Year Holiday. Until then, we’ll be sure to carefully inspect all our order files to make sure there are no abnormalities in the components or content. Originally, mass production was scheduled to be put in sometime in March, but the manufacturers we are working with are reopening earlier than expected. So we’ll be able to place an order towards the end of this month, about a month earlier than planned!

Thanks so much for reading through this very lengthy update. We can’t go without a fun fact, right?!

Today I want to star our Harpy Eagle. Did you know that Harpy Eagle’s talons grow to be about 5 inches (13cm)? Even the biggest bear, the Grizzly’s claws, which grow to about 2-4 inches, have a ways to go. No wonder these birds can carry 30+ pound animals through the air with a breeze. It’s their powerful talons!

That’s it for today’s update. We'll see you again next month!

Best,

Hani Chang🎈
